Choir: History

Chorphilharmonie Regensburg

In 1991 the Chorphilharmonie Regensburg starts, founded by the former opera-singer Horst Frohn, initially as "Vokalensemble Laaber". Frohn‘s motivation was to prove, that even in an allegedly parochial municipality like Laaber challenging music is possible. Therefore his vocal ensemble soon tackled great performances.  The initial spark certainly was the major success of the perfomance of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana".

1997 marks the beginning of great choir- and orchestral concerts on a yearly basis. Classics like the "Nelson Mass" by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Vesperae solennes de confessore",   Fauré’s  "Requiem", Felix Mendelsohn's "Elias" and several a-capella pieces have been performed.

In 1998 the choir was awarded the Musikförderpreis Oberpfalz.

2000: The choir said "good bye" to the 20th century, performing Händel's "Fireworks Music" and his "Coronation Anthems" at Laaber's market place, accompanied by a great firework at the castle ruin. The same year the choir travelled to Rome, where Händel's "Messiah" was performed twice at Easter.

In 2002 the choir travelled to Italy again. In Lecco and Brugherio this time an audience of about 1000 listened to Mozart's "Requiem" and his cantata "Ich habe genug".  The choir extended its  activities to CD recordings and TV appearances.

2004: The choir moved to Regensburg, at the same time changing it's name to “Chorphilharmonie Regensburg”. Soon it was a well-known component of  cultural life there.  Its repertoire now included, besides classics like Johann Sebastian Bach‘s "St. John Passion", the "Christmas Oratorio" and several of his cantatas also great choral works like Joseph Haydn‘s "The Creation", Felix Mendelsohn's "Elias", "Paulus" and his psalm-cantata "Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser", Anton Bruckner‘s great mass in F-major. Together with Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" this mass was performed in Regensburg and, as part of the concert series "Vocalise", in Potsdam. In the following year Brahms' "Deutsches Requiem" and "Schicksalslied“ were performed with great success in Wolfratshausen and Regensburg.

In 2011 the choir celebrated its 20th anniversary with two gala concerts: In spring 2011 Händel's "Coronation Anthems" and "Dixit Dominus"  were performed. Palm Sunday became a fixed date for concerts – the audience enjoys classics like Bach's "St. John Passion" and "St. Mathew Passion". Another fixed date for concerts more or less established itself for a concert every year in autumn. Classics like Mozart's "Requiem", Poulenc's "Gloria" and Puccini's "Missa di Gloria" have been performed at these autumn concerts.

In 2013, initiated by Horst Frohn, the choir entered a new expermiental territory:  with " Pupils‘ Dance Project 2013". Pupils of Regensburgs middle schools performed
a choreography, perfectly rehearsed by choreographs Chia Lin Ling and Julia Leithold, accompanied by Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", sung and played by the choir and orchestra of the Chorphilharmonie Regensburg and the Regensburger Domspatzen. Inspired by its success, there will probably soon be a new edition of this project, this time with another classical piece, though.

In 2016 the Chorphilharmonie will celebrate its 25th anniversary, by performing Johann Sebastian Bach‘s complete Christmas Oratorio on the fourth Sunday of Advent.

In 2017 the choir started a second edition of "Pupils' Dance Project", this time performing Beethoven "9th Symphony" together with about 150 pupils of Regensburgs middle schools. The same year the Chorphilharmonie performed Giuseppe Verdi "Missa da Requiem" with great success in Aldersbach (fundraising concert for the restauration of the Asamkirche) and in Regensburg.

2018 started with a great concert, giving  Johannes Brahms "Alt-Rhapsodie" and Mendelsohn-Bartholdy's "Lobgesang". In december2018 to  january 2019 the choir started a concert tour to China, with concerts in Peking, Qingdao, Huangzhou, Shanghai and Gangzhou..
